A day of fun and learning for all...
On October 15th, members from the Birmingham Elks Lodge #79 visited St. Barnabas School. The entire school assembled in the gymnasium to partake in the Dictionary Dedication. The Elks discussed the American flag and what it represents. The students participated in fun learning activities pertaining to the flag and the meaning of freedom. The K4-2nd grade competed in the coloring book contest, which is part of the Don't Do Drugs campaign. The Elks also discussed the 2009-2010 Essay contest being held for grades 5-8, the topic of the essay is "The American Dream, What is it?" The top 3 essays from Division I & II Alabama Elks Central District East will compete with Central District West, South, and North Districts for 6 state awards. The top 3 Alabama state winners from each division will receive saving bonds, engraved plaques and Top state entrants will go on to compete in the the National contest with 49 other state winners! All entrants submitting essays to the Elks Lodge will receive something for their participation in the contest. At the end of the Dictionary Dedication program, every student received a gift. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade student each received a personalized dictionary. It was a wonder day of learning and fun.
